Our first foal of 2001 was a tall bay filly by Grand Cru and out of the Hanoverian mare, Dunja (Dollberg) born Feb 28.  The filly is owned by Joyce Chatin of Ohio, and was bred by John and Tracey Weyl of Maplewood Farms in Kentucky.

March foals included 2 colts and 3 fillies.  Maryanna Haymon's mare, Amber Leann foaled a handsome bay colt with a wonderful attitude by Wanderbursch II (MD).  Mary Messenger's mare, Favre (Walldorf), delivered a friendly out-going leggy chestnut Longchamp colt, Laurenzo (NC).  Dr. Betsy Smith and Gunnar Lund's Elite Wertherson mare, EM Femme Fatale had a charming filly, Willow Rose, by Weltmeyer March 9, one of 3 foals expected from EM Femme Fatale by embryo transfer (MD).  Manyi Yu reported her mare, Zonya M, presented a lovely tall dark bay Carbid filly (CA).  Marefield Meadow's Hanoverian mare, Elektra (Eklatant), had a beautiful chestnut Brentano II filly (VA).  Maxine Mickel says the filly has a great shoulder and perfect hind quarters with a lovely face.

EM Femme Fatale's second foal of the year is a big beautiful black Weltmeyer colt, Waldemar, born April 1.  Gunnar Lund says the colt is her best yet, with presence and attitude from the moment he was born.  Secret Destiny xx foaled a big bold handsome bay colt, Wolkenprince, by Wolkenstein II for Judith Campbell (IL) April 8.  Columbia, a 22 year old Holsteiner mare by Cor de la Bryere, presented just her second foal, a tall refined bay colt by Fabriano for Dr. Noah and Christine Cohen (TX).  Easter weekend produced 4 colts.  Karen Batcheller's Elite Hanoverian mare, Bewitched, foaled a big, handsome chestnut Weltmeyer colt 13 April (OR).  Closet Dancer xx foaled a delightful chestnut Werther colt for Dr. Steve and Bettie Carroll (NC).  Carla Shown's Lemon Park mare, Loreen DH, who was USDF national Horse of the Year at Training Level last year, foaled an elegant bay colt, Roman.  To see his first few hours go to Carla's web site.  Laurel Ritter's mare Sazu had a big beautiful bay Weltmeyer colt with a perfect narrow blaze emphasizing his good looks.  Dr. Doug Langer (WI)'s Tb mare, List of Okla foaled a handsome chestnut Rotspon colt on the 22 April.  Rubino (Rabino/Pykzee [Palladium]), our first Rabino foal joined the herd at Maplewood Farms 25 April.  Tracey Weyl says Ruby is tall, leggy and strong with a beautiful face.  Goodnight My Love xx presented Johanna Doty (WI) with her second Wolkenstein II foal, a big strong beautiful chestnut filly, Wolkenfee, Saturday night 28 April.  On Monday, 30 April EM Winterset delivered her second Londonderry foal, a big, handsome bay for Dr. Steve and Bettie Carroll.  Bettie says the colt has a serene and regal expression and the most awesome neck for a newborn.   A bay Wolkenstein II filly from Amanda Gordon's mare Warfields in North Carolina was born April 15. Werther sired a colt with that "Werther personality and self-assurance" for Denise Secino in Florida from her mare, Dominie. Werthington was born April 25. Dr. Steve and Bettie Carroll's accomplished Domingo mare, Dom Perignom, delivered an exquisitely beautiful full sister to Rieslan on May 4. The dark bay filly was sired by Rotspon. Out in California, our Classic Sires Catalog covergirl, Elite Hanoverian Mare, Felina (Classically-sired by Werther) produced a tall, beautiful and personable son of Rotspon for Hilda Gurney and Dr. Mary Contakos on May 5. The chestnut colt has a blaze and 4 long stockings - they're thinking of naming him "Razzle Dazzle"! Anthony and Janice LaPorte's Weltmeyer mare, Weltmacht, has our first Pommery foal - a very lovely dark bay filly. You can already see Pommery's beauty and balance in the filly. Elite Hanoverian Mare, Gilda Wer foaled a confident, handsome black Weltmeyer colt May 10 for Kathy Benjamin in Wisconsin. Finally, Wichita produced another gorgeous Wolkentanz son to join his full brother in Tennessee for Kathy Meigs.

In June our first For Feeling foal arrived at Maplewood Farms in Kentucky out of Goldylocks [Grusus]. "Fergie" is absolutely beautiful, with a strong personality and sense of herself, and with lovely movements. Larry Fisher's Hanoverian mare, Mai Fraulein, had a very good, elegant chestnut Lanthan colt in California. Mai Fraulein is being bred back to Lanthan. Duane and Rebecca Thomas welcomed a black Lanthan filly from their Maranjo mare, Mandalay in Wyoming. Mandy is out of a full sister to Weltmeyer. The filly is stunning. Maplewood Farms also produced a bay Pommery colt, Pompeii, from their Elite Hanoverian mare, Dazzle Me [Domingo]. Pompeii is the ultimate in type, with a chiseled Arabian type head, lots of chrome, and a beautifully set on neck. He has a huge canter and an impressive trot. Nancy Schulba's A Jungle Prince mare, Arianna, foaled a charming chestnut Rotspon filly in California. The filly shows great character and beauty, with lots of chrome. Biagina Lazaroni's Diamont mare, Daokur, had an enchanting chestnut Weltmeyer filly, who joins her 2-year old full brother in Oregon. They will become part of Biagina's dressage stable when they grow up. Lisa Ramirez's mare, Amulette E, produced a splendid chestnut colt, Wulfrano, with lots of presence and movement in California. Amulette is the daughter of Lisa's Elite Hanoverian mare, Liebchen Mein.

In July, my Elite Hanoverian mare, Flair delighted us with a lively, bold chestnut Weltmeyer colt, Whiskey Jack on July 9.  Maggie Clark's Wiegenlied by Werther foaled a tall uphill chestnut colt, Feliciano, by Wanderbursch II on July 15.   Both mares were Classically-Sired themselves!

Our last (but certainly not least) Classically-Sired foal of 2001 was an elegant dark bay For Feeling colt out of Kronprinzessin for David Herndon (OR), born August 2.

    Congratulations to everybody!

Hanoverian Stallion of the Year 2001

Drosselklang II (Don Carlos/ Frustra II) was named Hanoverian Stallion of the Year 2001!  Famous for producing jumpers with the scope and technique to win at top international levels, Drosselklang II stands at the Hanoverian State Stud in Celle Germany.  Drosselklang II's full brother, Diavolo was a famous grand prix competitor, and his full sister, Dordogne, competed in advanced showjumping.  A third full sibling, Drosselklang I is an approved stallion.  Famous offspring include:  Dorain, Reserve World Champion Young Show Jumper;  Donnerlitchen, Champion six-year old jumper champion, Skyboy and Frechdachs both international show jumpers, and SPS Droste, champion mare at the 1995 Stadthagen Show.  Dorincord competed in the 2000 Olympics under Ian Miller of Canada.  Drosselklang II has 7 licensed sons and 15 States Premium Mares.  Naturally, he is an important part of the Hanoverian Jumper Breeding Program.

Hanoverian Stallion Licensing

Cloudy skies and rain could not dampen the energy of 109 2 1/2-year old stallions and their anxious owners at the Hanoverian Stallion Licensing in Verden Germany.  Conditioned, prepared and groomed to reflect even the dim light the young horses strutted their stuff.  After 2 days of presentation, free jumping and enduring crowds of interested breeders crowding their stalls and aisles, the champion emerged.  Tall, leggy, refined and black, the elegant son of the Hanoverian State Stud's thoroughbred sire, Natiello and out of a dam by Wenzel II was named Champion.  He was auctioned off for 300,000 DM to Denmark.  Reserve Champion was a dark bay stallion who wowed the crowd with his quick, scopey jumping.  He will go to the Hanoverian State Stud, and brought 330,000 DM at auction.  Third place was won by the high-priced stallion, a tall chestnut with long lines and 3 superb gaits.  He is by DeNiro, out of a Walt Disney/Grenadier mare and sold for 530,000 DM.

The "W" group of young stallions was presented first.  All had that flamboyant, elastic movement Weltmeyer is famous for.  Weltmeyer had 2 stallions licensed.   Wolkenstein II had 11/14 stallions licensed with 3 Premium (top fifteen).  Wolkentanz presented a group of 8 stallions, all with that "Wolkentanz Look".  Six were licensed, and 3 of those were Premium. Escudo I had 4 sons licensed, one Premium.  DeNiro had 3 sons licensed, one Premium, as did his sire, Donnerhall - 3 licensed, 1 Premium. Espri had 2 sons approved, as did Graf Top.  Alabaster had a son licensed, as did Carbid, Drosselklang II, Graf Grannus, Grand Cru, Hohenstein, Lanthan, Rabino and Werther.

Hanoverian Stallion Performance Test (Celle)

The 2001 Stallion Performance Test for Celle Stallions was won by a tall elegant black son of Escudo I named El Bundy (yes, Peg, that's right!).  Regardless, the stallion moves easily and freely at both the trot and canter and is very good to ride. Of course he is an excellent jumper.  Reserve Champion of the Performance Test was Provider, a light gray stallion with good rideability, an abundance of jumping talent and very good jumping bloodlines.  Other interesting new stallions were Weltano (Wolkenstein II/Calypso II/Domspatz), a lovely bay stallion who won the dressage section with lofty, rhythmic movements, excellent rideability, temperament and character.  Don Cavallo (Donnerhall/Weltmeyer) is a large-framed chestnut stallion with very good movements, especially a "9" walk, and excellent rideability.  He would be an interesting choice for thoroughbred mares.  White Match (White Star/Matcho/Trapper) is a charismatic bay stallion who charmed the entire audience during his brief performance.  While his bloodlines normally say "dressage", White Match is also an excellent jumper with very good technique over the fence and excellent rideability.  Carbanero (Carbid/World Cup/Absatz) is an elegant, tall chestnut stallion who should prove a versatile sire.  He is a good jumper, but also built for dressage, coming from a proven mare line.   Dr. Sieme at the Hanoverian State Stud is now working on freezing semen from these stallions.  We should know which will be available by the end of the year.

Important Stallion Lost

Werther, the very first Hanoverian stallion honored with the prestigious title, Hanoverian Stallion of the Year, died in January 2001.  Werther was a very important stallion in Germany, the US and the whole world. He produced international grand prix competitors in both jumping and dressage.  Werther ranked 5th in the 1999 USDA List of Stallions siring horses competing in dressage in the US, the top-ranked foreign-based stallion.  Some of his famous offspring include Willy the Great, competed by Hilda Gurney, Westerland, also competed by Hilda Gurney, Wordperfect, competed by Debbie MacDonald, and many more.  He was the very first stallion I imported semen from, and our first two foals were by him, Wroyale, bred by Hilda Gurney, and the mare, Willow, bred by Betsy Raine.  Classically-Sired Whiz Kid, Willa, Wroyale, and Felina are all USDF ranked Werther offspring.  Classically-Sired Fonteyn won the Bari von Buedigan Prize for top AHS inspection score in 1996.  His foals are athletic, attractive and highly personable.  We will miss him.
